When Large formatDan Cunningham visited the newly opened Pyrmont cafe, The Goodsline, in 2021, he wrote that “the cafe’s centerpiece, a 360-degree marble-clad bar, acts as a central nervous system, sending coffee and pastries to well-dressed customers.
Pyrmont Cafe – opened by Jack Hanna, co-creator of The Grounds of Alexandria and The Grounds of Sydney – is on the ground floor of a relatively new commercial building near the harbor in one of Sydney’s former industrial suburbs. Sidney.
Its name pays homage to the area’s history, which was home to the CSR sugar company in the 1870s, with a haul line to transport goods from Darling Harbor to Parramatta and beyond. “The idea of this place was to be a station or a stop,” Hanna said upon opening.
Less than a year later, The Goodsline won Best Cafe Design in the Australia-Pacific region at the Global Restaurant & Bar Design Awards.
The cafe’s design, by Sydney architecture firm Luchetti Krelle, features a shaded courtyard filled with plants and industrial interiors that pay homage to transportation, with elements such as carriage-style seating and huge hopper windows . It has a “beautiful blend of art deco and industrial elements, with Persian runners and moody pendant lighting to create an effect that is both timeless and transporting,” Cunningham wrote in 2021.
Of the 24 Australian restaurants, bars, seaside restaurants and neighborhood eateries that made the shortlist, five Australian establishments came out on top. In Victoria, vegan restaurant Lona Misa won the hotel category in the Australia and Pacific region; The South Yarra Yugen Tea Bar won the region’s best surface design award; and lavish butcher Victor Churchill won Best Self-Contained Venue in Australia and the Pacific. The biggest prize for an Australian venue was for underground cocktail bar Curious, which won the best ceiling in the world.
The awards ceremony for the London-based Restaurant Bar & Design Awards 2022 will take place in October. This year’s jury included designers, editors and hospitality experts, including Emma Palmer of Merivale, restaurateur Scott Pickett (Smith St Bistro, Longrain, Chancery Lane) and Good Atelier founder Aaron Crinis (Glorietta, Glory Days).
