Au Bon Pain launches a new bakery-café design

Au Bon Pain, a subsidiary of Ampex Brands, plans to redesign its bakery cafes to meet busy consumer lifestyles and growing convenience needs. The redesigned stores will include a new order station, self-service bakery and take-out areas for greater efficiency, the company says.

The new layout was designed for customers “who want to ‘in and out’ with great tasting fuel for their day”, according to Au Bon Pain. The company says it plans to roll out the new design to all of its stores in 2023 as part of its “Back to Bright” campaign.

“Improving the appearance of our locations is essential to our ‘Back to Bright’ campaign,” says Ericka Garza, President of Au Bon Pain. “We decided to pursue our promise to serve delicious food in a friendly, fast and clean environment and to create an exceptional customer experience. The Café du Futur visually represents the goal of our brand.

The new design continues the momentum started in July 2021, when Ampex Brands acquired Au Bon Pain and Tabbassum Mumtaz, CEO of Ampex, pledged to “lead the bakery-café segment into the future”. As part of the transaction, Ampex acquired Au Bon Pain’s 171 locations as well as the franchise rights to an additional 131 locations.

The company says this summer an existing Au Bon Pain franchisee signed a 10-unit development deal in the northeast, which was the fourth franchise deal signed since Ampex took ownership last year. By the end of 2022, the company says it will open five company-owned bakery cafes and six franchises, including five locations and five renovations in Thailand.

“Our new cafes give customers on the go what they crave and deserve – artisanal, delicious, fast food – while providing a beautiful space for customers who want to stay a while,” says Garza. “Fun details, like a sweet hello at the entrance, remind customers of our heritage as a French-style bakery, to which we remain true.”

The company described the newly designed bakery cafes as intuitive navigation, “with product placement and wayfinding signage prominent throughout the ordering process, while hand-painted floor and wall signage the hand recalls the French roots of the bakery”. The new design will offer indoor and outdoor seating.
